Fear of “The Bulk”

“I don’t want to bulk up.”

Have you ever heard someone say this?  Does this happen to be a worry of your own?

Let’s put this one to rest once and for all and then spread the word.

Most women will tell me they don’t strength train (or lift heavy) because they are fearful they will bulk up. More than likely your goal is to tone (lean up), not bulk. Let me define bulking.  To bulk up is to put on muscle AND fat.  You’re “bulky” when you have fat over the muscle.  This won’t happen unless you are taking in massive amounts of calories or carbs.

I’ve also heard other women put it quite simply, “I don’t want to look like a man.”  Take a deep breath, Girlz.  The bodybuilding women that look like they could crush an entire army are not natural.  Meaning they had help building that muscle from the use of synthetic steroids or growth hormones.  Women do not have the genetics to build this amount of muscle without some help.  If you aren’t taking steroids, you have no need for worry.

This is the difference between Natural and Unnatural.  Can you spot the Natural one?

You also can’t compare yourself to bodybuilders because a lot goes into their stage preparation.  Most of these women won’t maintain this look all year round.  As a matter of fact, don’t compare yourself to ANYONE!

I’ve had some people tell me they don’t won’t to look like me (*gasp*).  Although natural, you won’t look like me, because…. *drum roll*…. you aren’t me.  We all have different genetics, hormonal balances, and body compositions.  We have different ratios of muscle fibers (more later) and builds.  I’m larger boned and I find it easy to gain muscle.  My workouts are designed with this in mind, and your workouts should be designed for you.

Keep in mind, you don’t just wake up one day and say, “WOW!  I look like a man!”  This is a gradual process.  If you start noticing you are sculpting your body in a way you don’t desire, you simply change your routine (or diet).

Let go of the fears.  You will radiate feminine strength and beauty no matter what you’re build – short, tall, small or big boned, muscular or not so muscular.  We were made unique, and our fullest body’s potential is our own.
